Imitation is the best form of flattery, after all. Other than that, here is some advice that we have shamelessly culled from another publisher’s website. We also place great value on real, interpersonal connection, so if there is someone that we know, or know of, who would recommend your work to us, that would be a great way of making an introduction. If you’d like to submit a Writer’s Wednesday article contact us. We are always accepting submissions to our Writer’s Wednesday blog, encouraging writers to write a creative review of something we have published, linking their own work with ours. And so, one thing that does help to start a conversation is to tell us about one you’ve read. We love all our books, and we’ve invested lots of time and money in them (as have our authors, of course). Please be patient, and forgive us if our answer has to be no. This is because we are a very small team, with far too much to do, and simply not enough hours in the day. We can’t promise to read every submission, and at busy times we can’t even promise to reply to every submission, much as we would dearly like to. We never charge authors to publish their books.Īlthough we almost always commission books directly, we do accept a few unsolicited submissions (and it really is very few). We are a close-knit team, working hard to edit, market and produce books, while covering all costs. We are not a self-publishing company, vanity publisher, nor a hybrid. At Muddy Pearl, we are committed to performing the traditional role of the publisher, and doing that as well as we can.

That said, after the video, I spent another 5-6 hours making a complicated and confusing maze of troubles to complete. To combine identical tiles, you can move them in any direction. The game’s purpose is to combine the tiles until you get 2048. Someone has sent a few from other dogs being converted into the style, but it doesn’t fit. Play 2048 is a single-player mathematical puzzle game in which you must connect tiles with the same number of digits. It has simple, casual, light-hearted games which are best for boring. Bored Button is a collection of different fun game websites that gives you a new game every time you refresh the page. I opted for infinite because there’s no really good ASCII body. The Useless Web is a website that brings you to another ridiculously Useless Website. This one is straight-up static html, js and css… I recorded the initial build on Twitch and YouTube, so you can see the initial structure of the infinitely long head… or I guess neck in this case. I’m going to put together a video of how to complete the challenge… Will link it here if anyone gets past the prime section! The instructions are definitely a little obtuse, but with a little trial and error you can definitely figure them out! I’ve seen a lot of videos of people collecting wows, but honestly never anyone past this part. If you’ve rainbowed every prime number, you’ll unlock the next stage. Cat Bounce is one of the very first websites on the useless web, and has been on the site right from the start of time, delighting millions with falling cats from the sky, which, if I’m honest, we all need every now and then. There are multiple steps that are easy to mess up, though I’ve made it a little easier recently, first and foremost you need to get 10-15 large “wows”, which appear very randomly (a very small chance for every regular “wow” you get)… After that, you’ll need to click specific wow’s (prime numbers starting from the top) to make them rainbow wows. An artist would contribute a single tile. It worked similiar to the surrealist drawing game Cadavre Exquis. It’s a good grab bag of motivations.Ī long long time. The project was started by Nikolaus Baumgarten and emerged from a scene of people creating collaborative patchwork paintings together over the internet in the early 2000s on websites like. I also wanted some slight gamification, as though you’re going to drag on and on forever. It’s not too tricky to tell that the site is modeled off and inspired by The Endless Horse (though not nearly as cool of a domain) which is one of my useless web favorites – As well as one of the first people I interviewed when creating this series. Click to remove ' /> Like the description says, just a pointless game. Briefly, the perfect cure for buying some time. It features gifs of cats perfectly attuned to well-known tunes. I wanted doge, as doge is eternal, but I’ll admit I looked at a bunch of other ASCII art before that. Procatinator ' /> No matter what anyone says, cats are the ultimate procrastination thing on the internet. If you are working for a larger company then you might say – Marc, your comparison is totally missing the market reality. We will see how to run Kali Linux in containers such as Docker or LXC in episodes 4 and 5. And I should emphasize on the fact that if you can’t run it on Windows, that does not mean that you can’t manage and access it from Windows. That’s actually one of the reasons why I personally prefer Proxmox. If you want to plan ahead – you might want to chose one that can actually do a bit more – containers for example. But I would say it’s rather for pure Linux users really. Virt-manager is a Linux app really, that means you can only run it in Linux or if you would want to run it on Windows, then you would need to use WSL2 for example. That would eliminate Virtualbox and VMWare player and Workstation for example. If you want to run it on a separate machine then you might be interested if you can run it headless, that means if you can run the host without a screen and keyboard attached and access and manage virtual machines using a web browser for example. For Windows you would be limited to Virtualbox, Hyper-V or VMWare Workstation or Player. If you wanted to run it on your local machine then see what’s available for your operating system. The first question that you may ask is: Do you want to run the VM on your laptop directly or do you want to run it on a different or distant machine. If you spot errors, then please leave a comment and share with all of us. I hope that everything in this matrix is correct. I have compiled a little decision matrix for this. How can we make an educated decision which Virtual machine platform to use ? Actually, the limitations of each one will make that decision quite easy. Also guys – this video does not exclusively apply to Kali but basically to any type of Linux. At any time – use the chapters if you’re only interested in a specific part of the video. Last but not least we should have a look at Wi-fi options – what can we do in order to access the Wi-fi hardware from within a VM – and is it really necessary or useful. I will explain later why I chose those three. Plus – I would like to compare different Virtualization solutions, namely Virtualbox, Hyper-V and of course Proxmox. First the networking options, because that’s what you will need if you want to run tools like wireshark or arpspoof. I rather want to shed some light on two or three aspects if or when you run Kali in a VM. If you don’t then please check out this very popular video of fellow YouTuber NetworkChuck. I am sure most of you know how to do that. Today I do not want to show you guys how to install Kali in a virtual machine, a VM. Welcome to part 2 of this Kali Linux series. There are various networks that you can use and they have different names on different platforms - here’s a short list and how to create them: The following decision matrix can help you chose the right one In the video I am comparing the following platforms: Watch the video on YouTube Which platform to use We will also have a short look at options how we can map hardware (USB, PCI…) to a virtual machine with the three solutions. I have also compiled a little decision matrix that might help you chose the right solution. We will have a look at network options with Virtualbox, Hyper-V and Proxmox. With the virtual network adapters you don’t have direct access to the network hardware. Installing Kali inside a VM is easy - where things become interesting is when we want to chose the right solution and the right network setup for tools such as wireshark or arpspoof. Things to consider when running Kali Linux in a VM Things to consider when running Kali Linux in a VM. There’s a free limited non-commercial version available for hobbyists and personal use. You arrived on earth and heard about this thing called happiness that people have. A causal theory and understanding of happiness could be used for all of those things. If you knew the causes of happiness what could you do? How about increase your own happiness or, help people who are unhappy or, better appreciate why Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh is unhappy or, present valid scientific arguments that argue against incorrect claims about what causes happiness. For example, what causes happiness to go up or down. OK then, after we have measured some happiness, I bet you can think of some more pressing questions. For now, though, we will side-step those very important questions, and assume that, happiness is a thing, and our measure of happiness measures something about how happy people are. For example, if you force people to give a number between 0-100 to rate their happiness, does this number truly reflect how happy that person is? Can a person know how happy they are? Does the question format bias how they give their answer? Is happiness even a real thing? These are all good questions about the validity of the construct (happiness itself) and the measure (numbers) you are using to quantify it. “Great, thanks Captain Obvious”.īefore moving on, you should also be skeptical of what the numbers might mean. You’ve probably met some of those of really happy people, and really unhappy people, and you yourself probably have some amount of happiness. There are different people, and different people are different amounts of happy. We would expect those numbers tell us some things we already know. What kind of questions can you ask about those numbers? Well, you can look at the numbers and estimate their general properties as we already did. What do you get when you ask people to use a number to describe how happy they are? A bunch of numbers. Let’s continue with this imaginary thought experiment. We started Chapter two with some fake data on human happiness, remember? We imagined that we asked a bunch of people to tell us how happy they were, then we looked at the numbers they gave us. If you are looking for a big theme to think about while you take this course, the theme is: how do we ask and answer questions using data?įor every section in this book, you should be connecting your inner monologue to this question, and asking yourself: How does what I am learning about help me answer questions with data? Advance warning: we know it is easy to forget this stuff when we dive into the details, and we will try to throw you a rope to help you out along the way…remember, we’re trying to answer questions with data. The big reason is that we are interested in getting answers to questions using data. Let’s not forget the big reason why we learned about descriptive statistics. So, we talked about how to look at the data visually using plots and histograms, and we talked about how to summarize lots of numbers so we could determine their central tendencies (sameness) and variability (differentness). It was too much too look at and it didn’t make sense. As an example, see figues c) and d) below.Correlation does not equal causation -Every Statistics and Research Methods Instructor Ever As an example, see figue b) below.Īny value of \( r \) whose absolute value is not close to \( 1 \), indicates that data is weakly correlated. If \( r = - 1 \), there is a perfect negative correlation between the two variables and the plot of pairs of the two varibales lie in a line with a negative slope see figue e) below as an example.Īny value of \( r \) whose absolute value is close to \( 1 \), indicates that data is strongly correlated. If \( r = 1 \), there is a perfect positive correlation between the two variables and the plot of pairs of the two varibales lie in a line with a positive slope see figue a) below as an example If \( r = 0 \), there is no correlation between the two variables and therefore no linear relationship between the two variables exists. \( r \) can take values within the closed interval \( \). The correlation coefficient \( r \) between two variables \( x \) and \( y \) is a measure of the linear relationship between the two variables. Calculations of the correlation using the definition and the using sums are also presented through examples with detailed solutions.ĭefinition of the Correlation Coefficient The definition and interpretation of the correlations are first presented. The correlation coefficient, which is used to quantify and measure the relationship between two data sets, is presented with examples and their solutions. Correlation Coefficient Examples with Solutions Correlation Coefficient Examples with Solutions Keep in mind that, at the same location, it can take up to 1.5 hours to reach astronomical twilight after civil twilight, so plan your visual and/or astrophotography accordingly. By contrast, within the Arctic Circle, the Sun does not set in the summer, so there is no twilight at that time of year. At mid-latitudes, it can last anywhere from a half hour (fall to spring months) to one hour (summer months).įor mid-latitudes, the Sun is at a lower angle with the horizon, so twilight lasts longer than in places close to the Equator, with relatively short twilight phases.Īt high latitudes (around the summer solstice), the Sun’s path does not reach below 18° below the horizon, so twilight can last all night (from sunset to sunrise). HowĪ phase could be as short as 24 minutes (near the equator) or several weeks (near the poles). The best way to distinguish between astronomical twilight and ‘dark” is by comparing the visibility of fainter stars in the sky.ĭuring nights of a full moon, it is much harder to distinguish the period of astronomical twilight because the bright moonlight washes out the faint stars and deep-sky objects in the night sky.Īstronomical twilight varies by location and will depend on your proximity to the equator and the time of year. The average person would probably consider the astronomical twilight phase to be full-on nighttime.Īmateur astronomers, however, will notice that faint deep-sky objects such as star clusters are not as apparent as they would be at night. What does Astronomical Twilight Look Like?Īstronomical twilight looks like it nighttime, with an almost imperceptible bit of added light. Light pollution, specifically skyglow, will affect your ability to distinguish astronomical twilight from night as well as your opportunity to view anything but the brightest stars in the night sky. Astronomers may need to wait for truly dark skies for objects like galaxies and nebulae depending on the amount of light pollution present. But unlike the other phases, astronomers are able to see fainter stars during this phase.įaint stars and other celestial objects are visible and it is dark enough for astronomical observations. It may be difficult for some to distinguish astronomical twilight from night. After 18 degrees, it is considered ‘night’ or ‘dark’. It starts when the center of the sun is 12 degrees below the horizon until 18 degrees below the horizon. This is particularly important for sailors who use the stars and horizon for navigation.Īstronomical twilight is the darkest twilight phase. Most bright stars can be seen and the horizon is still visible. This is when the center of the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon until it reaches 12 degrees below the horizon.ĭuring this time, terrestrial objects are visible but artificial light is typically needed for outdoor activities. Nautical twilight is the next phase of twilight that starts when civil twilight ends. The brightest stars and planets (such as Venus) can also be seen during this time. Three Twilight Phases | Source: Leigh Cousins Civil TwilightĬivil twilight happens the moment the sun dips below the horizon until the center of the sun is six degrees below the horizon.ĭuring this time, sunlight clearly defines the horizon and artificial light is typically not needed. For this purpose, let’s look at the phases of twilight as they happen after sunset. Each phase is defined by the angle of the ‘geometric centre’ of the sun in relation to the horizon.Įach twilight phase happens twice a day, in the early morning (before sunrise) and late evening (after sunset). There are three phases of twilight, each one identifying a different level (or amount) of sunlight present in the atmosphere. It is also the last phase of twilight during sunset and the earliest stage during sunrise. Astronomical twilight is the darkest of the three twilight phases. The lower the sunlight is below the horizon, the darker the twilight will be. Twilight refers to the period of time when the sun is below the horizon where scattered sunlight illuminates the atmosphere. The rectilinear CDI moves to either side of the pointer with the CDI centered, it becomes part of the shaft of the course pointer.īut the term course pointer isn’t necessarily accurate. The HSI has a short pointer that you set to the desired course on the compass card around the outside. In this fashion, the VOR indicator’s course pointer and CDI would rotate with the heading. The answer was the horizontal situation indicator (HSI) that put a VOR/LOC indicator inside the heading indicator compass card. But relative angles of the current position remained difficult to envision, particularly with the windshield-wiper movement of the less expensive indicators versus the more intuitive rectilinear movement. This gave the pilot a separate indication of radial and the relationship to a desired course on the VOR indicator. The RMI needle points to the VOR just like an ADF pointer. Some pilots added a radio magnetic indicator, RMI. The problem with the basic VOR display is that the pilot needs a graphic mind to maintain situational awareness and it was easy to get confused sorting out course from radial from heading and position, while deciphering what the To/From flag was telling you. Add a little clever manipulation in the indicator, and you can select a specific course you want to fly to or from the station and the indicator’s course deviation indicator needle (CDI) will tell you which way to turn to get back to the selected course. To better understand the HSI, we’ll have a quick VOR review, then see how the HSI brings it all together.Ī VOR signal provides the exact angular relation of the receiver to the station. I get a lot of HSI questions-although rarely that convoluted-now that so many panel mount and portable devices contain an electronic HSI. Your HSI course points back to the runway and you’ve got a right needle deflection. You’re outbound on the localizer back course. Let’s start with an old hangar-flying puzzle.
